Mentoring Program

Back to Main Index

Halsey Battalion is seeking to revamp their mentoring program.  Currently, Cadet's voluntarily bring in their books and homework and spend time on Friday evenings working on these.  There are cadet's who are stronger in subjects who are available to assist with questions etc.  It is hoped that we could put in a true "mentorship" program.  This would entail pairing up cadets that are struggling with one or more grades to a cadet "mentor".  Possibly the mentors could continue to stay in touch with the cadets in the weeks between drills to help enhance a cadet's success.  Also, if a cadet who is assigned to the mentorship program did not have homework during that weekend, they would still be expected to work on that subject during Friday drill until the grade(s) met criteria or the criteria of the mentor program had been met.

Halsey is seeking one or more interested parents to assist in this endeavor.  It is hoped that we could locate a parent not currently assigned to other tasks within Halsey.  If you are interested please contact Alice Fevola at afev0602@yahoo.com .

What would be required of those individuals which we will call "Mentoring Coaches" until a better term presents itself--

bullet

Maintain current copy of report cards for all cadets, Cadets are required to carry at least a 70 (C) in all of their classes.  Working with the Training officer and AO (Admin Officer) to determine the best format to monitor those grades and forward most recent report card information to those officers in a timely manner.  Contacting cadet's or parents if necessary to make sure we have the most recent report cards.  Possibly following up with cadet, mentor, parent or teacher (depending on individual cadet's need) on how and if progress is being made.  Help determine criteria and standards for cadets to be placed on probation or necessary removal from unit based on performance, etc.

bullet

Determine which cadets are in need of mentoring as well as determining which cadets are best suited to be mentors.  Pair up appropriate candidates based on a variety of criteria such as subject(s) needing assistance with, cadet compatibility and possibly proximity or time availability of mentor (all to be determined with assistance of coach).  Ideally the "Mentoring Coaches" would be able to spend a couple hours on Friday evenings coming to drill and assisting with the mentoring process, at least until the program is up and running.  This could potentially result in a "Lead Mentor" on some Fridays where a coach is not available with coaches only being necessary every 2-3 drills.  Friday evenings at the armory are a great time to work on homework as well as time to work on subjects a cadet is having difficulty with.  Ideally the cadet mentors would work one on one with a specific cadet, however, we would like to make assistance available to other cadets working on homework on Friday nights who are not designated or mandated to the mentoring program.

Skills preferable for the Mentoring Coach(s)--good organizational record keeping skills, ability to motivate both mentors and those being mentored in a positive way, good communication skills, possible prior experience in teaching or tutoring (helpful, not required),  a willingness to be creative in trying new things to help these cadets SUCCEED in every aspect!!
