COMMUNICATION (COMMS)

Our unit currently utilizes a Yahoo! Webgroup for all of its important information distribution between drill periods. Please apply to the webgroup as soon as possible to catch up on older information that’s important and to be kept in the loop on all new information. This will be where all POD’s and POM’s are posted for upcoming drills. You may subscribe directly to the group with an email identifying yourself by name to the following email address:

HalseyBattalion-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

You can also send an email to the Training Officer, Ensign Fevola, to the email address listed on the front page under Contact Information. He is the Moderator of the web group. If you do not have internet access, it is important to let one of the officers or volunteers know so we may find an alternate distribution method for you!

Parent’s Handbook

If you are a new parent to the group, be sure to mention in your subscription that you need a Parent’s Handbook. USNSCC Parent’s Handbook may also be viewed on Internet by going to www.resources.seacadets.org, click on Parent’s Handbook link under Public Affairs heading on right hand side of window.

RESOURCES

The Sea Cadets have many Resources that the Unit, the Cadets and the Parents can use. Most of these resources revolve around documentation and various other tools such as training materials and manuals, etc. Below, please find a listing of the most important sites to visit with a brief description of each.

http://www.halseyseacadets.org/ - Admiral William F. Halsey Webpage.

http://www.seacadets.org/ This is the main Sea Cadets page with useful information for parents on it that describes some of the programs in more detail.

http://resources.seacadets.org/ - This page is used mainly for additional information as well as many training materials. It also provides many informative links. Parents could really learn a lot of in-depth information by reading many of the manuals here to get a good understanding of how the Sea Cadets work down to the very core. Also, the Cadets will use this site to study manuals and for training and advancement purposes.

http://compass.seacadets.org/ - This site is more information that the Cadet will use to obtain training information. All NLCC Cadets should come here to print out copies of their training syllabus under the NSCC/NLCC Training Section. All Cadets start off as E-1’s. It is up to the individual Cadet, along with persuasion and direction from the Training Officer, to complete the necessary coursework for advancement.

TERMINOLOGY

The Sea Cadets, just as in the actual military, utilize a very unique language. This may seem daunting at first; however, here are some basic terms to get you started that are more important to know up front:

POD – Plan Of The Day (Describes in detail what’s in store for each individual drill weekend)

POM – Plan Of The Month (Gives overview of goals to be accomplished by unit for entire month, not just drill weekends)

OOD – Officer Of the Deck (Responsible for all visitors and incoming calls and maintaining the watches and security of the site throughout the drill weekend)

QUARTERDECK – Where all visitors enter and exit in during drill session, this is also where Parents can contact their children in case of emergency and speak with the OOD. (See Contact Information on first page)

There are many more terms used, however these are the most important to know to get started.

CLOSING

GOALS OF THE UNITED STATES NAVAL SEA CADET CORPS

· To develop in young people an interest and skills in seamanship and seagoing subjects

· To make cadets aware of the prestige of a military career

· To instill in cadets an appreciation of our nation's maritime history, customs, traditions and the importance of the modern Navy and Coast Guard as an essential element of America's defense team

· To build in every cadet a sense of patriotism, courage, self-reliance, confidence, and similar qualities which will mold good character and citizenship, thus boosting the quality of our nation's manpower

· To increase the advancement potential of cadets who may later elect to serve in the Navy, Coast Guard or another branch of the armed forces

The above describes what our unit strives to accomplish. If you as a Cadet have any questions, utilize your chain of command to get them answered. This means to visit with your Squad Leader or Petty Officer. For anything you prefer to go directly to an Officer with, this is ok; we practice open door policy here in the Halsey Battalion.

For Parents, we also extend the same courtesy. Any questions you may have or any information you may need, may be obtained at all times by speaking with one of the Unit Officers or volunteers. Again, feel free to contact us at any time. We look forward to working with each and every one of you during these exciting times!
